Service for the Home

In the event of inclement weather and unsafe road conditions, the People of God – you, the Church – can still gather around God’s Word for a time of worship and prayer. I encourage you to gather with your family, invite some of your neighbors, and spend some time in your home which will become a church today – God’s people gathered to hear God’s Word and to offer Him prayer and praise. Those of us who will gather at Church will remember you in prayer today. May the Lord unite us as His people, even as we worship in different places.

To Him be glory, praise and honor!

Blessings in Jesus, Pastor Larry

Leader: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All: Amen!

Leader: Arise, shine, for Your light has come!

All: And the glory of the Lord has risen upon you!

Confession and Forgiveness

Leader: Since we come together to hear God’s Word and call upon Him in prayer and

praise, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one

another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free

ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the

infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ,

and saying, God be merciful to me, a sinner.

All: Have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life.

(Take a moment for silent, personal Confession)

Leader: God is a God of grace and mercy. Forgiveness is found in Christ alone who

died for our sins, conquered sin and death and lives and reigns on high so that we

might live in Him forever. Rejoice that we are forgiven through the mercy of Christ our Lord! Amen!

Psalm 146 (Read Together)

1Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, O my soul!

2 I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

3 Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.

4 When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish.

5 Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God,

6 who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them who keeps faith forever;

7 who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry.

The LORD sets the prisoners free; 8 the LORD opens the eyes of the blind.

The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous.

9 The LORD watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow and the fatherless,

but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

10 The LORD will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations.

Praise the LORD!

Prayer of the Day (Read Together)

God of light, shining in darkness, through a little Child, born in Bethlehem, You open to us the treasure of Your grace. Help us to search diligently for Him, so that we may offer our lives to You with thanksgiving, joy and praise; through Jesus Christ, the rising star. Amen!

Reading for the Day Matthew 2:1-12

1In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men

from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.”

3 When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the

Messiah was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been

written by the prophet:

6 ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers

of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’”

7 Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. 8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also

go and pay him homage.” 9 When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. 11 On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt

down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts

of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

Discussion:

Spend some time reflecting in silence on the text. What thoughts come to mind? What jumped out at you? What spoke to you? The time in silence helps us to hear God’s Word and what that Word is speaking to us. Read the text again. Feel free to share anything with others in the group. May the Holy Spirit lead you in the reading of His Word!

The Confession of Faith - The Apostles Creed (spoken together)

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and

was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers

Use this time to take prayer requests. Please remember those on our prayer guide,

the homeless and those without heat. You can pray your own prayers or use the

following prayer to assist you:

Lord God, Heavenly Father, we give thanks for all Your goodness.

We bless You for the love, which sustains us from day to day. We praise you for the gift of your Son Jesus, our Savior, through whom You have made known Your will and grace. We thank you for the Holy Spirit, the comforter; for Your Holy Church; for the means of grace; for the lives of all faithful and good people; and for the hope of the life to come. Help us to treasure in our hearts all that You have done for us, and enable us to show our thankfulness by living our lives as a reflection of Your love. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Offerings: As disciples – followers – of Jesus, we give to the Lord in response to all that He has given us. Thank you for your support of our work together for the Kingdom through our New Kent Church community. You may bring your offering of support to worship next week. This week, perhaps we can give thanks to the Lord as well be helping a neighbor…maybe by shoveling, or going to the store, or just being a friend. May our lives be an offering to God who has so graciously given us all things!

The Lord’s Prayer (Pray Together)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer of Thanks

Leader: We praise You, Lord Jesus, for all of Your gifts to us!

All: Strengthen us as Your people, connected to You by Your Spirit, that we may grow in faith and love to share the Good News of Jesus as we live in Him! Amen!

Leader: As God’s people, we proclaim:

All: Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen (Ephesians 3:20-21)

The Benediction

Leader: Almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit bless us now and forever.
